Project Description
Syntek Energy & Control contributed to improving the reliability and operational efficiency of PLTS Messah and PLTS Papagarang, two off-grid solar power plants operated by PT PLN (Persero) UPK Flores. With a combined installed capacity of 910.4 kWp and an existing battery capacity of 1,044 kWh, both facilities play an important role in supplying electricity to communities in the island region.
The project was initiated in response to declining power supply reliability caused by battery degradation, alongside increasing community energy demand. To address these challenges, Syntek implemented a new Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) with a capacity of 2 × 261 kWh at each location and integrated the existing solar PV systems, new BESS units, and diesel generators through an Energy Management System (EMS) developed by Syntek.
Integrated Microgrid and Intelligent Energy Management
Through the EMS, the solar PV system, battery storage, and diesel generators operate in a coordinated hybrid microgrid configuration. The system manages battery charging and discharging cycles, maximizes solar energy utilization, and controls diesel generator operation to maintain a balance between electricity generation and demand.
The implementation has significantly reduced diesel generator operating hours. The generators now operate for approximately 2 hours within a 24-hour operating period, allowing the system to rely more on solar energy and battery storage.
Improving Efficiency and Power Supply Reliability
Reducing diesel generator operating hours is one of the key benefits of this implementation. It helps lower diesel fuel consumption and improve overall power generation efficiency. At the same time, the integrated energy management system helps minimize potential power supply disruptions, supporting more reliable and sustainable electricity services for local communities.
Supporting Reliable and Sustainable Island Power Systems
This project further demonstrates Syntek Energy & Control’s capabilities in microgrid integration, power system automation, and intelligent energy management. By integrating renewable energy sources, battery storage, and conventional generation into a coordinated system, Syntek supports the development of more reliable, efficient, and environmentally responsible power systems, particularly in remote island areas.
For solar power plant operators experiencing aging equipment or declining system performance, Syntek also provides power plant assessments and targeted revitalization recommendations to help improve system reliability and operational performance.
